Abbaye aux Dames
Founded in 1047, the Abbaye was the first Benedictine convent in this region of France. For many years it prospered and played a significant role in both religious and political matters, however it suffered badly during the anglo-french 100 Years War (Saintes itself was split in two by the warring factions). During the French Revolution, with its antipathy to the Establishment in general, the Abbaye was used as a prison and as a troop garrison. Thankfully the Abbaye has been beautifully restored in the last 30 years and now serves as a music and cultural centre.
Climb up the steps of the clock tower and you can see the amazing structure of the building and from the top there is a wonderful panorama over the roof tops of Saintes towards the cathedral of St Pierre.
The buildings are open to the public everyday (except during Christmas and New Year) and are very much worth the tariff of 2 euros for adults under 16's free. Allow about 2 hours.
The Longtail Guide to Royan covers the area around Saintes and Royan and gives you detailed local knowledge to get the most from your visit.
